Outreach Program

The Gympie and district Women's Health Centre has maintained and strengthened its outreach service for women in the surrounding rural areas of Gympie. The aim of outreach is to increase and sustain accessibility of services for women and encourage women to actively participate in identifying their own health needs. Outreach has been operating on a monthly basis to Imbil, Tin Can Bay and more recently Rainbow Beach. As these communities are unique, the variation in offered services and health promotion have been interesting. The community of Imbil is an example of how regulat outreach sessions have helped to facilitate a group where women meet in friendship while participating in health promotion sessions. Women from around the Mary Valley are always welcome and at times extend sessions, however the core group remains consistently from imbil. A few examples of sessions conducted at imbil have been:

  • Women as Carers
  • Stress Management
  • Pelvic Power
  • Women and Depression
  • Menopause - what does it mean to you?

Outreach to Tin Can Bay has also developed from a community consultative approach where needs are continually assessed both formally and informally. Health education and promotion continues to reflect the health needs indentified by the women in the community with future planning being part of the ongoing evaluation of this service. A few examples of sessions previously conducted at Tin Can BAy are:

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and its alternatives

  • Osteoporosis - healthy bones
  • Pelvic Power
  • Anxiety - getting a grip.

Outreach to Rainbow Beach looks to be exciting with the upcoming 'Community Information Centre' being developed.

Outreach is a valuable part of the centre's service delivery and incorporates strategies necessary to build healthy communities.
